A blue whale is an air-breathing mammal, so its survival depends on reaching the surface to inhale oxygen, and when it becomes severely weakened by illness, injury, starvation, or old age, its body can no longer generate enough energy to swim upward or maintain buoyancy, which is why it makes its final movement toward the surface—to try to take one last breath of air as its oxygen levels drop critically low. Its oxygen reserves gradually run out while its muscles lose strength and coordination, making each movement slower and less effective, and even if it reaches or nears the surface, it may not have enough strength left to properly breathe or recover. As this happens, the whale begins to sink deeper into the water column because it cannot counteract its own weight or the surrounding pressure, and its vital systems start to shut down due to lack of oxygen, leading to unconsciousness and eventually death, after which the descent continues passively, driven by gravity and the inability of the body to respond, marking the final stage of its life beneath the ocean surface.
